NINE OF STONES - MATERIAL GAIN

NEW TITLE: "DELIGHT IN EXISTENCE"

I CHING: 14, TA YU, "POSSESSION IN GREAT MEASURE"

REVERSED I CHlNG: TUNG JEN, "FELLOWSHIP WITH MEN"

A close look at the Nine of Stones will reveal the same background as the Four of Stones. The point of view has moved to the side and a little further back. We see here the sky, the sea, and the tail end of the mists, with only a glimpse of the great tree. There is more light here, with only a hint of darkness at the roots on the lower left.

The careful approach of the Eight of Stones has led to a more developed situation, with greater stability, than in the earlier cards. Looking at the original title, material gain is not an end in itself either for individuals or society. It is, however, a necessity because, without food and shelter, people cannot even begin to pursue a spiritual path. Although many Native American people practice ascetic denial during certain periods, such as a vision quest, the ideal of totally rejecting the world is as alien to Indian culture as excessive wealth. This comes from viewing the physical world as a sacred being.

The new title, "Delight in Existence," makes clear that the gain is not money, but a world of sensuality and beauty.

The hexagram is 14, which Wing calls "Sovereignty" and Wilhelm titles "Possession in Great Measure." Success comes to the person through good fortune. Others find themselves drawn to the person and wish to follow her or his lead. We might expect such meanings to come from an image of one strong line among five weak ones. Instead, we see the opposite. The yang lines all flock to the yin because of the yin quality of modesty. Reversed gives us 13, "Fellowship with Men," the hexagram from the Three of Stones. It makes clear the need to share our possessions, or gains, with others.

We see two balanced lines of four stones each, with the ninth stone near the bottom, close to the Earth. The image suggests the Hanged Man. Although this card depicts progress and gain, it rejects the idea of constant progress, constant economic growth. If a person or a society constantly seeks more and more wealth, what they actually have will never really be used. They will never know delight in the world. Good fortune can bring greater beauty and harmony into the world.

DIVINATORY MEANINGS

In readings, the Nine of Stones indicates good fortune. It shows a likelihood of gain: more money, more security, better health, more comfortable conditions. It shows a likelihood of a time of simple pleasures and enjoyment. If the Five of Stones should appear in the Past and the Nine of Stones in the Outcome, it signals great improvement. However, the person must avoid complacency, greed, or conceit. The good things in the card may come from hard work, but they also come from a good "turn of the wheel." The person needs to recognize life's gifts.

REVERSED

Reversed, the Nine of Stones does not indicate loss or bad luck so much as the danger of the person misusing the material gain. There is a possibility of greed, or, more generally, the desire for more money and success than the person actually needs. It might be time for the person to step back slightly and look at goals.
